Smoke from the fires in Northern Sacramento Valley is expected to impact air quality in the eastern portion of the Bay Area down to Santa Clara Valley on Friday and Saturday. Residents in affected areas should stay alert to news coverage and health warnings related to smoke. Check air quality at fire.airnow.gov and take steps to protect your health from smoke. Learn how at www.baaqmd.gov/wildfiresafety. Pollution levels are not expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard. A Spare the Air Alert is not in effect.

The Air District's Board of Directors approved $3 million in funding for the upgrade of wood-burning devices with cleaner heating options. Incentives for this program are expected to be available later this summer. The funding will provide assistance for potentially up to 1,300 Bay Area households to replace older, more polluting fireplaces or wood stoves with cleaner electric heat pumps, or natural gas or propane stoves or inserts.

The Air District is announcing that more than $90 million in incentive funding is now available through the Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Equipment Replacement Program to upgrade or replace eligible heavy-duty vehicles and equipment with cleaner and zero-emissions technology.

The Air District is announcing the availability of funds to install cleaner heating options for residents located in areas highly affected by wood smoke and areas with disproportionate impacts from air pollution. The program will open at 11 a.m. on January 16, 2018, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Twenty three shipping companies participated in the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies vessel speed reduction program in 2022, contributing to cleaner air, safer whales, and a quieter ocean. Companies are recognized for their vessels transiting at ten knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Southern California region.

The Air District’s 2015-2016 Winter Spare the Air season ended February 29, with only one Winter Spare the Air Alert issued. The nine-county region saw consistently cleaner air this season as frequent storm systems moved through the Bay Area beginning in November and continuing through early February, helping to disperse air pollution.

A decommission-only option is also available for homeowners to remove existing open-hearth fireplaces or older, uncertified wood-burning stoves or inserts.
