The Air District is amending Regulation 6, Rule 3 to further reduce local and regional wintertime fine particulates and visible emissions from wood-burning devices used as a source of primary or supplemental heat or for ambiance. Public comments on the draft staff report and rule must be received by close of business Monday, August 31, 2015.

The Air District is issuing the winter season’s first Spare the Air Alert for tomorrow, Saturday, December 5, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Air District is asking residents to not burn wood over the Thanksgiving holiday to help prevent air pollution from rising to unhealthy levels. Air quality is expected to be in the Moderate category on Thanksgiving Day and extensive wood burning over the holiday could cause air quality to become unhealthy, especially in inland valleys. A Spare the Air Alert is NOT in effect and wood burning is allowed, but strongly discouraged.

Smoke from increased wood burning is expected to cause air quality to be unhealthy with the heaviest impacts in the Santa Clara Valley due to cold overnight temperatures and light winds.

A public hearing to adopt these proposed amendments is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, 2015.

High pressure over northern California will act like a lid, trapping smoke at ground level. Offshore winds may also transport air pollution from the Central Valley into the Bay Area.

Cold overnight temperatures, stagnant air, patchy dense fog, and a high-pressure system over the region is allowing wood smoke pollution to continue to build up over the region. Concurrently, offshore winds transporting additional pollution from the Central Valley is continuing to cause unhealthy air quality in the Bay Area.

A delay in onshore winds has contributed to increased particulate pollution levels in the Bay Area today. If these conditions continue, there may be an exceedance of the federal health standard. A Winter Spare the Air Alert is NOT in effect today and wood burning is not illegal, but it is strongly discouraged.
