As part of its efforts to reduce air pollution in the Bay Area, the Air District has allocated more than $90 million towards grant programs that will provide funding in phases from July 2016 through June 2017 for mobile source projects.

The program will open at 10AM on August 26, 2016, on a first-come, first-served basis for homeowners and landlords to replace their wood burning device. Funding will be prioritized for low-income residents, residents located in areas highly affected by wood smoke, and households exempt from burn bans due to a wood-burning device being the sole source of heat. Starting November 1, 2016, anyone whose sole source of heat is a wood-burning device must use an EPA-certified or pellet-fueled device that is registered with the Air District to qualify for an exemption.

Smoke from the Kincade Fire is expected to move south into the greater Bay Area today. Air quality will likely be impacted from the Kincade Fire through mid-day tomorrow. There may also be smoke from local fires, like the Suisun Marsh fire, that could further impact air quality tomorrow. Later tomorrow, offshore winds will help move smoke from the Kincade Fire back over the Pacific Ocean, but local fires could still contribute to unhealthy air quality.

As part of this initiative, the Air District Board authorized up to $1.3 million of upgrades in public schools in Richmond, North Richmond, San Pablo, and Tara Hills. An additional $1.7 million will be used to expand air filtration upgrades in schools in Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco, and $1 million will be allocated to the Air District’s Home Air Filtration program.
