The Bay Area Air Quality Management District will ask Bay Area employers to sign the Cut the Commute Pledge to extend remote work options for employees at a press conference in San Jose on Monday, July 13 at 11:30 a.m. A continuation of remote work can help maintain the Bay Area’s air quality progress even after shelter-in-place orders are eased.

The Air District is extending a Spare the Air Alert for smog through Wednesday, July 3. A Spare the Air Alert remains in effect today, Tuesday, July 2. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. Very high inland temperatures in the 100’s and weak afternoon sea breeze, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

On Monday, September 28, the Air District is hosting the last of a series of open houses to discuss the agency’s four new and amended draft petroleum refinery emissions reduction rules. This open house will be held at Lincoln Elementary School in Richmond starting at 6pm. The public comment period for these rules and amendments closes on Friday, Oct. 2.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert for wildfire smoke through Monday, September 14. This will be the 26th, 27th, and 28th consecutive Spare the Air Alert called. Smoke from the many fires throughout California, Oregon, and Washington is continuing to heavily impact the Bay Area and is forecast to produce unhealthy air quality in the region through Monday.

The Air District is issuing the seventh Spare the Air Alert for smog (and the 11th overall this year) on Thursday, October 19. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy tomorrow. High pressure over the region is expected to produce light offshore winds and hot temperatures across the Bay Area. These conditions, combined with motor vehicle exhaust, will produce unhealthy ozone levels.

The Air District announced today that it has successfully secured a Closure Plan and Agreement with Martin Marietta, terminating operations at its Bayview Hunters Point sand and aggregate processing site at Pier 94. This action will require Martin Marietta to cease all sand and aggregate processing operations by October 31, 2023, and comply with dust control provisions until it vacates the site.

Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy today and tomorrow. Very high inland temperatures and weak offshore winds, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will continue to create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for smog on Monday, September 30. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. High pressure over northern California is expected to produce offshore winds and hot inland temperatures in the upper-90s to low-100s. High inland temperatures, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

The Air District’s Clean Heating Efficiently with Electric Technology, or Clean HEET, Program will begin accepting applications for grants that can help to offset the cost of switching from a wood-burning stove or fireplace insert to an electric heat pump. The program is designed to improve air quality in communities by replacing polluting wood-burning heating devices with cleaner heating options. 

The Air District is preparing to distribute over $124 million in funding to support local communities overburdened by air pollution — and we need your input! This funding comes from penalties collected from industry and businesses that violate Air District regulations. Your feedback will help shape how these funds are used to reduce air pollution and improve health outcomes in your community.

The Air District has announced a $13.3 million grant to the San Mateo County Transit District toward the installation of new high-capacity electric bus charging infrastructure at its San Carlos facility. This SamTrans project will help accelerate the transition of the SamTrans bus fleet to zero-emission technology and improve air quality in communities most affected by air pollution.

The Air District is requiring a new Residential Fireplace Disclosure for anyone selling or leasing property with a wood-burning device in the nine-county Bay Area region. Beginning June 1, anyone selling or leasing residential property within the Bay Area will be required to disclose the health hazards of wood smoke, as part of the signed disclosure documents in real estate purchase or rental transactions.

The Air District has organized a conference entitled, Climate Forward Bay Area: A Leadership Forum, that will be held on October 13 and 14 at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco. Technology, government, NGO and industry leaders are invited to register and participate in this forum by sharing ideas and approaches to reducing local greenhouse gases while maintaining the Bay Area's economic viability.

The Air District is hosting a virtual Climate Tech Marketplace event, Cutting-Edge Governments: Leading Investment in the Green Revolution, on October 22 at 10 AM. The event’s keynote speaker is Mariana Mazzucato, author and economist who helped shape the Green New Deal. She will be addressing the roles the public and private sectors must take to ensure growth is more innovation-led, inclusive and sustainable.
